Message
Friendships between children and positive adult role models are truly magical.  For the mentors, they're an incredibly rewarding opportunity to make a profound difference in the life of a child.  For the child, it's a funfilled way to gain self-confidence and self-esteem.

Statement of Philosophy
The staff and volunteers at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cambridge work as a team to provide a service for children in our community. This service provides each child with an opportunity to come to know a mature role model and to develope a friendship with this person. Volunteers are able to offer a unique role that can not be replaced by paid staff. Some of the reasons for this are: the contact between a “Big” / mentor volunteer and their “Little” / mentee (Little Brother or Little Sister) is more meaningful because they do not have a vested interest in making the contact, because they want to and the goal is to develop a friendship. Volunteers are able to advocate for the “Little” / mentee more effectively because they come to know them on a personal level and are not tied to extensive administrative work. Volunteers bring their own experiences, skills, and community contact to our organization, thus enriching the organization and the Littles we serve. The “Big” volunteers have flexible schedules which allow them to be able to give service to Little Brothers or Little Sisters when it is mutually convenient. The volunteers bring the community to our organization and act as ambassadors for us in the community. Most importantly, Big volunteers create a bond of friendship with their Littles unlike any other, which is unique to their relationship. Some of the many intangible benefits to the Little Brothers and Little Sisters are: increased self-esteem, opportunities to have greater exposure to the community, bonds of friendship with some one who is not a family member.
