Booster Seats now mandatory . . .
BOOSTER SEAT LAW TAKES EFFECT ON SEPTEMBER 1st, 2006
Effective September 1st this year, certain children will be required to be in a booster seat when being transported in a motor vehicle.
As the Big Brother/Big Sister of a child who may fall into this category we wanted to advise you of this new legislation to ensure that you are protected.
The following are the official guidelines put out by the Ministry of Transportation: A child can start using a seatbelt alone once any one of the following criteria is met: - child turns eight years old
- child weighs 80 lbs (36 kg)
- child is 4’9” (145 cm) tall.
You may wish to check the website yourself at http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/ We have advised all parents/guardians of children under 8 of these guidelines and requested that they supply a booster seat for their children if necessary. As a volunteer we ask you NOT to transport any child who requires a booster seat unless an appropriate seat is available. Failure to do so could result in a $90.00 fine, plus 2 demerit points. Please check with the parent/guardian of your little brother or sister prior to your next outing to ensure the legislation is complied with.
