One child at a timeA Big Brother or Big Sister is a caring, mature adult 18 years of age or older; from any walk of life; from any ethnic group; single or married. The volunteer "Big" is asked to make a minimum of one year commitment to their "Little" or their assigned group.
We provide a positive influence and role model to the youth of our community between the ages of 6 and 16 years old. Volunteers can choose from any number of programs, which include our traditional one-to-one, Couple/Family Match, Flex Time, Big Bunch Group, Cross Gender Match and In-School Mentoring.
Our mission statement is to be a community organization respected for our leadership in serving the distinct needs of children through facilitating the delivery of high quality preventative programs based on relationships with appropriate volunteer role models. We have opportunities for both male and female volunteers in a variety of different roles. Please feel free to e-mail us or give us a call with any questions at 624-7655.
YOU Have Something To Offer!
In our community of Cambridge and North Dumfries, there are children (many from single parent families) who would enjoy spending time with an adult friend and mentor. Mentors are dependable volunteers who want to share their interests and hobbies with a child.
YOU Can Make A Difference!
By sharing your time with a child, you can make a difference, not only in the child's life but also in your own! Perhaps you'll find out a little more about yourself, expand your interests, receive that little extra experience that you need for your career or just enjoy being a "kid" again.
How It Works
Our program is committed to compatible friendships, so that everyone including parents, children and volunteers are happy with the matched relationship. In the traditional Big Brother & Sister program, the hours are flexible and you'll be doing things you want to do, when you want to do them. How much time you spend together depends on your schedule and the activity you plan. During the first year, visits consist of 2-3 hours per week. Flex-time is available for matches that can not meet on a weekly basis. All visits must have parental/guardian consent.
There is minimal financial obligations and expensive outings are discouraged. Children and parents help contribute to the activity cost when possible. Our organization also tries to plans monthly group events that the volunteer and child can access at minimal or no cost. Activities can range from taking in local community events, sports activities, walking the dog, washing the car, baking cookies, board games, plus many more ideas, depending on what you and your "Little" would like to do together.
